RESPONSE
Although the gaming community appears to be fun, sometimes it can be quite a sinister place. Since the rise of online games, many individuals have experienced unwarranted terrible abuse. Females are the most targeted by abusers as they are seen to be inferior gamers. This also applies to gay individuals and people of colour. By becoming more aware of this issue, I decided to find a way to combat online abuse through the design of my final major project.
Modifyx is a hypothetical software extension which aims to tackle online abuse within gaming platforms.
The main objective of this project is not to “fight fire with fire” and attack abusers, but it is to ensure that every player is able to game in peace and therefore begin to enjoy their gaming experience once again. Modifyx lessens the communication of hate as the software’s features aim to make the players attempts at abusing more difficult. The software also provides extra features which allow other players to have more control over what they see/hear from others over online chats.
By bringing this to light it is hoped that the abusers will reflect on their actions, to question them and to rethink the notion the abuse they give, while also communicating support for all discriminated gamers.
What is the Software and what does it do?
Modifyx aims to ensure a safer gaming experience for all through the use of it’s high-tech features which finds and eliminates any hateful language in chat and over mic. Any abusive behaviour recognised by the software are then turned into strikes - these are as form of punishment. This then makes it much more difficult for abusers to disrupt the gameplay of others. In addition users are able to keep a log of each player they come into contact with, as a way to ensure that any abusive players are able to be easily found, blocked and reported. Furthermore, Modifyx also has a feature which allows the player to dictate what language they wish to avoid by creating personalised language filters.
Overall, it is not about the abusers, it is about the players. In other words, Modifyx puts the players back in control of their gaming experience.
